5 Things To Do Before Renovating Your House
The renovation of a house can be tedious, but it doesn’t have to be. If you plan to renovate your house, consider doing the following five things first before remodeling anything.
There is no right or wrong way. Just remember that if you do these things now, the benefits will come later and pay off in ways you never imagined.
1- Cleaning The House
Cleaning is a must! Remodeling your kitchen without sanitizing and disinfecting will lead to unhealthy food prepared in an unclean environment. Renovating any part of your home without thoroughly cleaning any areas you plan on touching comes back to haunt your renovation plans down the road. Leave no stone unturned when cleaning.
Ensure you clean every inch of the space that will be renovated and then cleaned again after completion. Take out all trash, dust, vacuum thoroughly, scrub down walls and surfaces with a heavy-duty cleaner designed for these tasks (I like Clorox Clean-Up), sanitize and disinfect any furniture or appliances that need it. Don’t forget to clean up under the sink too!
2- Hire A Professional Contractor
While cleaning your house is an important responsibility that you have when renovating your home, so is hiring a professional contractor. Not only are professionals more knowledgeable in what they do than amateurs, but they also know how to create a detailed schedule for your house renovation project. There’s nothing worse than having a home renovation project go on for months because none of the contractors you hired have been able to stick to any deadlines they promised.
3- Gather Up Your Project Plan
Whether it’s updating your kitchen, adding a bathroom, or installing new flooring, gather up your project plans from professionals, including but not limited to an architect if you are building an addition, designer if you’re redecorating, and/or a contractor in charge of the renovation process.
The more information you have about what will be added or changed to your house, how long each step is expected to take (i.e., demolition), and when exactly construction needs to start so that there is a little downtime as possible. This means that the whole process will be better for you in the long run when it comes to cost and accessibility.
4- Add A Second Story Deck
As a bonus, before renovating your house, consider adding a deck on top of your garage or using existing space on top of your garage to add a deck that will give you an aerial view of what is going on below. Adding this extra level of airiness and light will not only allow you to enjoy outdoor life but also open up new windows for you (pun intended) into how things are progressing with renovations.
5- Invest In A Home Security System
Even before renovation, a home security system is an excellent way to protect your belongings during downtime while working at your house. While it may not be feasible (or even possible) for you to leave everything inside your home completely untouched, from locked doors to empty cupboards, there are practical options available for you and your family’s safety, so don’t forget them!
Whether it’s for safety reasons or to know what’s happening within the walls of your home, adding a second story deck is an excellent idea. Before renovating any part of your home, consider these recommendations and have a fun and safe renovation experience!
