Affordable Ways to Deal With a Cold Winter

If you’re in the middle of winter right now and struggling with the low temperatures and rising heating costs, then you’re probably trying to figure out creative ways to cut costs and keep your family comfortable. There are plenty of small changes you can make to ensure you stay warm without spending a fortune on heating. From locating drafts in your home and covering them, through to investing in extra blankets and working from home. Here are some affordable ways to deal with a cold winter:

1. Working From Home
If you can work from home even just a few days a week, you’ll save considerable money on your commute and be able to reinvest that money into your home. Working from home also means you’ll skip the daily commute, won’t have to head out early each morning to scrap the ice off your car and to ensure that it’s defrosted before setting off each morning. You can even stay in your pajamas if you want to. Working from home is great, especially in the dead of winter, so see if it is an option for you. 2. Invest in New Blankets
Upgrading your bedding is a wonderful way to keep you and your family cozy at night. I recently purchased a fuzzy weighted blanket, and not only do I feel warmer at night without having to spend more on heating, I’m also more relaxed due to the weighted glass beds in my duvet cover. I suggest ensuring you have a couple of blankets you can use on your couch, to keep yourself cozy and comfortable no matter the weather outside. 3. Cover Up any Drafts
Drafts are a way that cold air sneaks in quickly. One of the most common areas for drafts is around the door frame, especially for older doors. I suggest running your hand around the edge of the door to see if there are any obvious drafts. If there’s a large gap under your door between the door and the floor, it may be worth buying some snake-like door draft blockers to help keep the cold air out.

4. Consider Moving House
If your house is just too cold and it’s a rental property, it may be worth looking into moving houses. While moving can be a real process, if you have a landlord who’s not prepared to invest in ensuring your rental property is warm during the cooler months, it may be better to find another option that is better insulated and has better heating options. Winter can be tricky, especially if you’re on a budget and don’t want to spend a third of your income on heating. Hopefully these suggestions give you some ways you can deal with the cooler months and keep you and your family cozy all year long.
