Focus on the Relationships That You Already Have

You should try to expand your network. However, you do not want to forget about the relationships that you already have. Connect with your colleagues and the other people who are in your circle.

Go to a Networking Event

Sudberg recommends that you go to a networking event in your area. This allows you to meet people who have interests that are similar to yours. You can discuss your interests with other people and bounce ideas off of each other. If you are not sure about where you can find a networking event in your area, then there are several places that you can look.

You can go on Meetup, Linkedin or Eventbrite. Those websites will allow you to use filters so that you can find events that are based on the profession that you are in.

Be Active on Linkedin

Not only do you want to use Linkedin to find networking events, but you should also try to be more active on that website. You can add people who are in the same profession as you can. You can also post regularly on the website and comment on other people’s posts. You can meet genuine connections on Linkedin.

If you want to get the most out of Linkedin, then there are specific things that you will need to do. You need to make sure that you use the appropriate photo on Linkedin. You should also share your location, skills and education on your profile.

Step Outside of Your Industry

Ideally, you want to network with as many people in your industry as you can. However, you should also talk to people who are outside of your industry. You can talk to people who have the same hobbies as you. If someone has the same passions as you do, then they will also be able to help you.

Volunteer

Many people shy away from volunteering because you don’t get paid to do it. However, volunteering is one of the best ways that you can network. You can meet people who can be used as references later down the road. Additionally, the experience that you get while you are volunteering can help you enhance your career.

Join the Alumni Association

Jordan Sudberg believes that if you went to a college or trade school, then it likely has an alumni association. You should join the alumni association in order to expand your network. Most alumni organizations have events that go on during various times of the year. You will not only be able to meet people, but you will also be able to get new career opportunities.
